Fun with Marzipan
So recently I’ve been going back to the city to goto cake classes at my old school. I took a marzipan workshop for two days with aclaimed cake artist, Toba Garrett. We worked on marzipan fruit and also characters:

Army Helmet Cake
So at the last minute I was requested to make a camouflage cake for a girl who is going away to join the US Army. While i wasn’t too keen on the short amount of time that i got to make the cake, who am I to turn down a paying customer? So I was asked to make an camouflage cake they didn’t cake what flavors it was and they even asked for a dozen cupcake pops (with the army colors).
So I wound up making a chocolate cake with vanilla frosting and decided to one up their request. I figured instead of just a regular circle cake with camouflage on it, I made the cake look like an actual army helmet.

So from what I heard they all loved the cake and the cupcake pops. I’m really happy and I had a blast making this cake. I think it came out really really well.

Roller Derby Cake
So last night was the Roller Derby Holiday Party. One of the best times I’ve had out lately. I also got to surprise everyone with the Skate Cake I made for the occasion. Everyone seemed to love it. Went into detail on the derby skate, made the logo made sure the wheels were even edible etc. I love how it came out and I felt really proud and accomplished presenting this and seeing everyone’s reactions. I was really happy that not only did they love how it looked but also how it tasted!

Football Cake
So my friend’s girlfriend asked me to please make her boyfriend a cake for his 26th birthday. He’s a very big football fan so she wanted a football cake for him. Originally she was going to buy a cake mold for it but I told her I knew how to make it without a mold.
I am really happy with the outcome of the cake. I really felt acomplished being able to carve the cake myself and not need a mold to give it the shape. Also the board came out really nice; made it part of a football field and even put a pylon at the goal line. We even wrote his name in the endzone.
I didn’t get to see him at the party since I was at practice ( i finished making the cake, delivered it then went to practice for derby), But from what I hear he really really drunkenly loved the pylon.

Upcoming status on the cake business
So my logo is finished and I have to just say thank you so much to Rei for helping me and creating this and the other picture for me (both are going to be used on the webpage).
I feel like i’m becoming such a professional now and that I really have a business. I’m not just some chick who bakes in her home for her friends.
So in a couple of weeks I have a cake due for the Long Island Roller Rebels Awards Dinner. Very excited I’m making a Roller Derby skate cake. I also think I’m going to make cupcakes to go with it since the cake might not feed everyone. The cupcakes will also have the logo on them.
Otherwise I found a great site where I can buy my supplies wholesale and not spend all the profit. I found that going to like AC Moore or Michaels has been doing this to me since it’s very costly since I need alot of things such as fondant, stands, tools etc. I’m also hoping that I have my business cards done by the party so that I can hand those out as well. I’m also planning on sponcering the team and perhaps getting more orders from the girls and their family and friends. I love roller derby and I’ve been on the team for 3 months now. So if free please click on teh link for the long island roller rebels and see what we’re all about please.

The Simpsons!
So this is the Simpsons cake I made for Sarah’s graduation. Took somewhere between 6-10 hrs to complete from baking, carving, fondant and gumpaste making. Everything was made from hand (I even turned the fondant into chocolate fondant which btw is much tastier then the original). I think the hardest part was the figures, I thought they’d be easier but putting their body parts together was a bit more tricky, luckily I have toothpicks which helped to keep them together. The hair on Lisa and Maggie omg that was a “delight” but you know what, in the end I was very proud of the cake. I was even impressed with the help I recieved from Muppet and his determination for me to make this awesome cake.
Everyone at the party seemed amazed and loved the cake, I’m just happy it traveled to Rhode Island in one piece the only thing that fell off was barts arm which I reattached when we reached our destination. If only these people lived closer I know I could use them as clients
But you know word of mouth always helps and I’m really happy I made this cake. Val (one of the workers at Villa who helped me a bit) said I’m becomeing a professional and I’m going to become famous for my furniture cakes. LOL Watch that’s what I teach at ICE one day like Elisa Strauss taught her piecing fondant class.
This week I have a rubber ducky cake for my niece’s 1st Bday (Bianca omg you got so big so fast), and a baby shower cake. The baby shower cake is a half sheet chocolate with buttercream. I’m thinking of putting chocolate ducks around the sides and an umbrella on the top with the word “Showers for Misty” (that’s the mother-to-be’s name). Now all I have to do is practice my buttercream flower making. Should be fun!

So this week
So this week I have a cake due on Sat. I’m creating a Simpsons couch cake (think the opening of the show). I’m making this for my friend Sarah for her college graduation. I also have to make brownies since apparently my cake might not feed everyone (who knows its hard to figure out how much a couch feeds, much less how to slice it :-p
In other news I need to call the baby shower customer and find out exactly what I’m writing on the cake. I know the daughter/mother to be’s name is Misty but alas I duno if the father is in the picture and if I shall be writing showers of happiness for both of them or just her. Otherwise I’m making a half sheet cake with an umbrella design on the top and little duckies around the sides. The cake will be vanilla buttercream with chocolate cake and I’m going to use yellow for the boarders.
And finally my website is almost done and complete, all I need is my logo from Re to give to my friend Meaghan and some more pictures of my work and I shall practically be official and professional

Externship first week
So I just started my externship at a local bakery out east. So far I really like it there. While I’m not making wedding cakes and other great and brilliant masterpieces, I’m learning and working my way up to being able to do things with perfection. I love all my co-workers, and my boss, while sometimes irks me (who’s doesn’t) is really a great person to learn from.
So far I’ve made a bunch of cookies, blondies, magic cookie bars (which i never heard of before i made them the other day), washed lotsa dishes, and did alot of prep work. And I’ve learned that I’m tired after working long hrs in the bakery(and my hrs aren’t as long as they should be yet) and I love sitting down. But keep it coming, I want to get better and faster with what I do…and develop more talent then being a minion.

Possible B-day Cakes
So I have been doing research for John’s bday and know I def want to make a dessert for him. I originally wanted to make a Simpson’s Couch cake, but figure that by the time I buy all the supplies and make it, it prob won’t feed the entire party. So I’d have to make another cake as well.
Then I came across these photos of cupcakes that look like hamburgers. John is obsessed with burgers, It looks really good, easy to make and def I could make enough to feed everyone. So I’m thinking I’m going to make them instead. Perhaps I’ll make the simpson’s cake another time (like when I have a paying job) or in addition to the cupcakes. But so far I really like the cupcakes since they’re unusual and quirky…just the way I like em!
