The Simpsons!

So this is the Simpsons cake I made for Sarah’s graduation. Took somewhere between 6-10 hrs to complete from baking, carving, fondant and gumpaste making. Everything was made from hand (I even turned the fondant into chocolate fondant which btw is much tastier then the original). I think the hardest part was the figures, I thought they’d be easier but putting their body parts together was a bit more tricky, luckily I have toothpicks which helped to keep them together. The hair on Lisa and Maggie omg that was a “delight” but you know what, in the end I was very proud of the cake. I was even impressed with the help I recieved from Muppet and his determination for me to make this awesome cake.

Everyone at the party seemed amazed and loved the cake, I’m just happy it traveled to Rhode Island in one piece the only thing that fell off was barts arm which I reattached when we reached our destination. If only these people lived closer I know I could use them as clients :-) But you know word of mouth always helps and I’m really happy I made this cake. Val (one of the workers at Villa who helped me a bit) said I’m becomeing a professional and I’m going to become famous for my furniture cakes. LOL Watch that’s what I teach at ICE one day like Elisa Strauss taught her piecing fondant class.

This week I have a rubber ducky cake for my niece’s 1st Bday (Bianca omg you got so big so fast), and a baby shower cake. The baby shower cake is a half sheet chocolate with buttercream. I’m thinking of putting chocolate ducks around the sides and an umbrella on the top with the word “Showers for Misty” (that’s the mother-to-be’s name). Now all I have to do is practice my buttercream flower making. Should be fun!

Baking as we speak

So as I type this I have Sarah’s Simpson couch cake in the oven baking. I just checked them, def need another 10 minutes at least. I’m a little annoyed at the cake pans that I got for my graduation. Muppet’s mom (ma) got me square baking pans to help start my business. They have a pic of a 3 tiered cake on the box. I was really excited thinking yes I know can make square cakes. Unfortunatly when I opened the box I saw they only gave me one of each tier. In order to make tiers usually you need at least two pans in the same size (so i would need 6 pans in total) so I can either make a much shorter/smaller cake or buy another set. To me this is unjust and very rude of Martha Stewart co! But of course they’d do this, they want to make money not see people succeed who aren’t them. So since I only have (1) 8in pan I’m making an 8 and 10 in cakes and I will carve to even them out. I have to carve the cake anyway so that it becomes a couch so not too big of a deal.

In other business news my logo seems to be coming along quite nicely as well as my website. It finally hit me that this is really happening…I’m actually starting my own business. My mom told me that she and my dad are really proud of me and so are my grandparents (my grandfather is actually impressed I’m starting a business all of my own) and of course my ma and Muppet.

I’m really happy I’ve had Muppet here to encourage me to do this. I swear I never would have thought of going to culinary school and studyin pastries if it wasn’t for him. He never gave up on me and even when I wanted to give up on myself he keep believin in me and even today talks about the potential of Pixie Cakes and what we should do for the business to help it grow.

Oh and also I know I have to also mention my mom who when I came home after being dimissed from my externship and felt I didn’t know anything and was a failure she’s the one who said I can do anything I will show her and told me to open my own business. She felt I knew what I was doing look at my portfolio and that the woman was an idiot who doesn’t know how to teach. So thank you Mom and Muppet.

Ok so the cakes are now done, cooling and tomorrow carving shall begin along with gumpaste molding :-)

So this week

So this week I have a cake due on Sat. I’m creating a Simpsons couch cake (think the opening of the show). I’m making this for my friend Sarah for her college graduation. I also have to make brownies since apparently my cake might not feed everyone (who knows its hard to figure out how much a couch feeds, much less how to slice it :-p

In other news I need to call the baby shower customer and find out exactly what I’m writing on the cake. I know the daughter/mother to be’s name is Misty but alas I duno if the father is in the picture and if I shall be writing showers of happiness for both of them or just her. Otherwise I’m making a half sheet cake with an umbrella design on the top and little duckies around the sides. The cake will be vanilla buttercream with chocolate cake and I’m going to use yellow for the boarders.

And finally my website is almost done and complete, all I need is my logo from Re to give to my friend Meaghan and some more pictures of my work and I shall practically be official and professional :-)

So this is the plan

So yes I really need to post more often. This should be my New school year but not going to school for once resolution :-P .

Anyways I finished the externship out east. OMG I’m so happy I’m done. The woman was horrid. She treated employees as if they were less then human. She called me stupid, said I don’t know what I’m doing, and not everyone is ment to make cakes. And she was surprised I wasn’t crying when she told me that she couldnt’ hire me I was unhireable (she lied about going to pay me to work until the end of september after my externship and free 210 working hrs were over) since I cried every day (oh soo not true).

So my decision is this…I plan on proving her dead wrong! I’m starting my own cake business. I know I can do it, I like making creative edible works of art and I am good at it despite what she says! My friend Rei is making my company logo :-) and my friend Meaghan took it upon herself to start making a website for me.  Now all I have to do is make more cakes and take pictures. I have Re’s wedding cake pics (see picture in this blog), my friend Sarah’s graduation cake for next week, I have a baby shower  cake for later this month, and my niece’s 1st bday cake. So now all I have to do is figure out pricing and keep up my confidence with my dream. I also plan on writing freelance for either a food magazine, write some short stories finally, and continue makin desserts for Villa Napoli, my bf’s restaurant.

I can do this! I will bring Pixie Cakes to life. Oh and I know I’m not bad like that woman said, since I applied to another place and while they don’t have openings currently they did like my work, were impressed and said to keep up the good work (and she’s not related to me)!
